About 46 Ranch

A Legacy Rooted in Family and Hard Work

The story of 46 Ranch began in the early 1900s, when Alberico Dellaganna, a miner-turned-dairyman, purchased the land that would become the heart of his family’s ranching operation. Over time, the Dellaganna family raised cattle, horses, and grain, turning the property into a self-sustaining homestead that pulsed with rural life. Generations of Dellagannas grew up here learning to care for the land, respect the seasons, and contribute to the agricultural heartbeat of San Luis Obispo County.

When the property changed hands in 2022, its story didn’t end; it entered a new chapter with the local Winter family, who took the helm with a vision rooted in regenerative agriculture, family collaboration, and respect for the land’s legacy.

A New Chapter

Today, 46 Ranch is a diverse, working ranch where pasture-raised eggs, heritage livestock, and seasonal crops all play a role in nurturing soil health and community connection. What began as a shared family dream has grown into a thriving operation that blends old-fashioned hard work with modern sustainability.

At the center of this new chapter is the Winter family, each bringing their own strengths and passions to the land.

Dirk, a lifelong grower and the guiding hand behind the ranch, leads with both experience and heart. His vision has helped shape 46 Ranch into a place where regenerative practices and productivity go hand in hand, where every decision serves both the soil and the future.

Bram, Dirk’s son, is the farmer at the core of 46 Ranch’s regenerative mission. He’s often found in the fields grafting tomatoes, planting wine grapes, and hand-watering young crops. His work reflects a dedication to soil health and balance, and his favorite season is harvest, when all that care finally comes to life.

Robin, Dirk's partner, brings creativity to every corner of the Ranch. A designer by trade and a lifelong lover of the outdoors, she’s helped shape the look and feel of the ranch. Her work blends thoughtful design with stewardship, honoring the land and reflecting the family’s shared vision of beauty rooted in purpose.

Jessica, Bram’s wife, manages the goats, sheep, and guardian dogs. Her care extends from the animals to the handmade goods she’s creating, including small-batch soaps and salves made from goat milk, crafted with the same patience that defines life on the ranch.

Tawny, Dirk’s daughter, is known affectionately as “the chicken lady.” With help from her sons (when they're not playing football for the Templeton Eagles), Tawny manages the ranch’s flock of pasture-raised hens, gathering eggs daily for the Cambria Nursery Farmstand. Her love for the chickens, flowers, and homegrown living brings warmth and energy to the land.

Together, the Winters have built more than a family business; they’ve created a living example of what it means to work with the land, not against it.

Life on the Ranch

The sounds of 46 Ranch tell its story best — the low hum of bees, the bleating of goats, the quiet cluck of hens foraging in the grass. Guardian dogs keep watch over the herds, working in partnership with the people who tend the land. Every animal here has a purpose: goats manage vegetation, chickens enrich the soil, and cattle graze rotationally to restore the pastures.

This is the essence of regenerative ranching, a system that restores balance, supports biodiversity, and builds soil health year after year. It’s patient, steady work, guided by observation, respect, and the natural rhythm of the land.

The bounty at 46 Ranch shifts with the seasons, reflecting the natural cycles of the Central Coast. Everything is cultivated with care, using regenerative and sustainable practices that prioritize soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity.

Preserving the Land, Honoring the Legacy

At its heart, 46 Ranch is a story of continuity and care, a bridge between past and future. From the Dellaganna homestead to the Winter family’s stewardship today, every crop planted and every animal raised carries the same purpose: to protect the land, strengthen its ecosystems, and ensure that its story continues for generations to come.

From the historic red barn to the pastures that now hum with life, 46 Ranch stands as a living reminder of what can happen when history and innovation share the same soil. Step by step, and season by season, the ranch continues to grow, honoring its past while cultivating a future deeply rooted in the land itself.
